Hi Class,

I am doing grades now. I will have them done in a few hours. I'll post again when I've submitted them. I'm in the office today if anyone wants to come get their journals or vocabulary cards. I have checked them all.

Reminders

Hello Class,

Well, we only have one final class remaining. It is a very hectic and bittersweet time.

First, know that I appreciate all your hard work this semester.

Also, I'm enjoying reading your impressive magazines!

Reminders:

  • Last day for Moodle quiz is Sunday, June 17th at midnight (the site says the 15th, but you have until the 17th).
  • Wednesday = vocabulary cards and journals collected (if you want them back, you can pick them up from me sometime....even next semester - just send me an email or Kakao or stop by my office)
  • Wednesday = final exam = completing an outline for an essay - I will give you an essay and you should identify the main parts, which we have been discussing for weeks now. Review the PPT on essays if you are not clear on the parts of an essay (hook, thesis, etc.). There will also be a some mistakes for you to correct, but not many. Mistakes will include common mistakes I have corrected in your writing. You can study the rules on the pages listed in our textbook for each type of mistake: capitalization (pg 192), commas (pages 196-197), and formatting compound and complex sentences (pages 203-204, 210).  I plan to make the exam as quick, painless, and easy as possible. You have worked hard enough this semester!
This post is long enough. I will post the list of journal topics separately in a new post soon.

A Phrase a Week

I just came across this website that some of you might find useful: The Phrase Finder

It's free!

Magazine Project - Friday's class

Here is the PPT from Friday's class: June 8 - Magazine Project

I've been reading your essays, and they are quite good! I hope to return them to you on Wednesday.

I hope you had a good weekend despite the end of the semester being busy.

Remember to bring your journals to give to me.

Moodle

I deleted your failed Moodle quizzes, so you can retake them if you want.

Just so you know, you only need 45% to pass, which is a low and generous passing score. So only quizzes below 45% fail.

Friday, June 1

Here is the PPT from today's class: June 1

If you were absent today, you are still responsible for completing your essay by next Friday's class.

There will be no excuses for late essays as you have had a couple weeks to prepare them. If you plan to be absent Friday, you should bring it to me early, or have a friend bring it on Friday. Try not to be absent Friday because I will be explaining your final project and you will be working on it in class with your group. It's important that everyone attend the final classes as the project is 10% of your final grade.

The instructions about what you need to give me on Friday and how you need to collate it are in the PPT. Also, I gave everyone feedback today, but if you were not in class, you could not get the feedback.

If you were absent, you will do better on your essay if you come see me before Friday to discuss your topic and check that your outline is good. Remember this is 50% of your final exam grade.

Remember to complete the rubric and proofread your paper carefully for grammar errors, such as using the wrong verb tense. This is your final step after you think it is well organized and contains all the necessary components.

Please send me an email if you have any questions. Remember: no class Wednesday.

Have a great weekend!

Trey

Happy "Coming of Age Day!"

Here are two links I read about today: Idols to celebrate "Coming of Age Day" and IU gives viewers a kiss for "Coming of Age Day"

What are you reading, listening to, or watching in English these days? This will be your next blog post assignment, so you can get started any time you like. Feel free to add a video clip, lyrics, or image to your post about any experience you have had with English outside of the classroom. If you haven't had any, you can always write about one of the books you read and if you would recommend it or not. Or, if you have visited the English Zone, you could write about that.

I had some experience with Korean this weekend because I was apartment hunting. I'll tell you more about it in class on Wednesday.

See you Wednesday!

May 9th - Cause and Effect

Hello,

Some people wrote that the images and videos made them feel like they wanted to go on a diet. This was not the intention of showing them, but it does prove the point: Feeling that you should be prettier or skinnier is the effect that the media has on women. It is very difficult to escape this feeling.

The video and images from today were meant to bring awareness and to empower you, not to make you feel bad or not good enough. You can still choose to go on a diet, exercise, and shop. But it's also important to be aware of where those desires come from - to be aware of the causes of your feelings.

When we are aware of the effect that advertising and media have on us, we can make important decisions based on all the information, rather than acting based on only fabricated appearances that were designed to manipulate and control us.

Here's the PPT: Cause and Effect

And here is just the video if you'd like to share it or watch it again: Video

See you Friday!

TOEIC

Hello Class,

This is a reminder of the dates you can take the TOEIC to receive extra credit to improve your grade in the class. Another benefit of taking the TOEIC is that for each student who improves her TOEIC score, I can give another A beyond the 80% limit. You still have to earn the A though.

The university encourages students to take the TOEIC.

I am encouraging you to take the TOEIC because research shows that reading a lot in English can improve your TOEIC score. I want to see if it is true for our class. I think the results could be interesting even though this is not a controlled study.

Here is the information about when you can take the TOEIC:

Grades - Progress Report

Hello Class,

Starting next week you can come see me to check your progress. This is especially important if you are a scholarship student and need to maintain a certain grade. As you know, it is possible for 80% of the class to receive As. That doesn't mean 80% of the class will receive As. It is only possible. Now is the time to see where you stand because the end of the semester will be too late to improve.

Even though there is a curve, you are still graded on the work you do, which is detailed on the syllabus. The requirements have been repeated in class a few times. People who do not complete the reading homework regularly can not expect to receive the same high grade as someone who has already read more than 80,000 words and who completes all assignments on time.

Another situation that is unfortunate is that only 80% of the class can receive an A if they earn an A. So, if 100% of you earned an A, only 80% could get an A.

The exams and the paragraphs you wrote will not be returned in class. You must come see me in my office to get your results and discuss your progress. Until now, you have not really been graded on your writing. Feedback has been given to help you improve. You have been graded on your effort/participation and the content of your writing (not the grammar). All the reading and writing you have done so far has been practice. It has been preparing you for the second half of the semester.

The second half of the semester will have more focus on your writing ability. When you meet with me, we will discuss ways you can improve before the final writing exam.

Have a great weekend!

April 23, 2012

Hello Class,

This is just a reminder that your book reports are due Wednesday. Each group will present their books to the class. I saw some students working hard on them today. I'm looking forward to seeing what you have done. If you have any questions before Wednesday, do not hesitate to send me an email.

See you in class! Don't be absent Wednesday because you will lose 10 points!

Rainy Weekend

I am not a fan of the rain. Luckily, I spent most of the day at the 14th International Women's Film Festival . It was a great experience to see films made by women, and also by teenage refuges from North Korea. If you have a chance, I recommend attending one or more of the films over the next few days.

Here is the PPT from Friday's class: April 20th.

Enjoy the remainder of the weekend!

April 18th

Hello Class!

First, congratulations to the two students who have read more than 80,000 words! It's amazing! We still have half a semester left! Do you think they will continue to read? Time will tell!

Moodle Update

One student is only 361 words away from the 80,000 word goal!

Woo hoo!

Great job!

Saturday, April 14, 2012

Congratulations!

Wow! A few of you have passed the halfway point of your reading goal of 80,000 words! Great job!

Our top reader is only 6,271 words away from the goal! Excellent work!

I hope that you are enjoying reading in English and feel yourself improving as you continue to read! Reading is one of the best ways to improve your ability to understand English.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Friday the 13th!

Hello Class,

Here's the PPT from today: April 13th

Also, 우리는미동입니당, Sungshin English 2, and Five Girls need to choose a book quickly!
Please send me an email so I can approve your book.

Little Women (Sungshin Best English), The Mill on the Floss (Greatest1), Sherlock Holmes and the Sport of Kings (Sungshin Generation), The Elephant Man (Lovely Newbies), The Wizard of Oz (Banana Group), Anne of Green Gables (Supadupadiva), and The Love of a King (Trey's Family) have already been chosen, so you can't choose any of those.

Oh, and also, because I showed a sample of The Last of the Mohicans, you also can't choose that book.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Friday's PPT

Here is the PPT from Friday's class. If you were absent, you should do the DEAW. Also, you should schedule a time to make-up the quiz.

Friday, March 30

Have a great weekend!

Friday, March 30th

Hello!

First, sorry about the sales people today! I didn't know they were making a sales pitch for their academy. I thought they were from Sungshin. I think they tricked me with a Sungshin envelope! But...even though my Korean is terrible, I think I figured out they were trying to get you to go to their academy.

Second, to clarify homework: you don't need to write a blog post this weekend. If you are behind in posting, you can catch up. And, of course, you are always free to post anytime!

If you didn't comment on one of the blog posts about a free topic (last homework), you should read one and comment (put your name in the comment so I can give you credit).

Other homework: Just keep doing 5 vocabulary words each week. And...read 1 or 2 books and take the quiz(zes) (or complete Reaction Report(s)) before our next class.

Have a great weekend!

Monkey's Paw Part 2

I made a smaller file, so you can also access it below if you still need it.

Also, great work on your blogs! I still need to comment, but I see you are all doing well and writing some interesting things! Good work!

Money's Paw Part 2

Reminder

Friday's homework: each person in each group writes a blog entry on a topic of their choice. It was due on Sunday, but you can still receive credit for the writing if you do it by Tuesday at 6pm. You should also comment on someone's blog entry.

Right now, 5 Girls is doing the best on the assignment. Check out their blog entries about music here:

A couple other students have done the assignment well, but as a group, this is the best example so far this week.

Remember: 40% of your grade is the writing you do. Each week I keep a record of who did their blog writing, so it is important to write something.

Website

Hello!

I just found this website: allkpop. It could be good practice to read about K-pop in English. I'm planning to visit it so I can learn more about Korean pop culture.

See you Wednesday!

Moodle Quizzes

I fixed some things on Moodle. If you failed a quiz, you can retake it one time now. Your failed quizzes were deleted.

Also, if you couldn't access a quiz, try again. You should be able to find them now.

Starting now, only read books from the level 2 and level 3 shelves. Those will be the only ones you can take quizzes for. The level 1 shelf is too easy for level 3 students. Talk to me privately if you have a special circumstance.

Have a great weekend!

Professor Trey

p.s. We're winning on words read now! Good work!

Hello!

Another clarifying point: you can only take a Moodle quiz 1 time in 24 hours.

I'm glad to see many of you have taken a quiz. Keep going! After 24 hours of course :).

Great Work!

Hi Everyone!

I've been reading through your blog homework and comments. I saw some great comments. I'm glad to see you are interacting and writing in English!

I haven't finished commenting yet, so don't worry if you didn't get any feedback from me on your homework yet. I will be leaving more comments tomorrow and Tuesday.

Keep up the good work!

Important Notice Regarding Blogs and Blogging

Hello Class,

1. Please check this blog regularly for updates. I suggest checking it 2-3 times a week.

2. Please read the comments to engage with English, your classmates, and me. Starting now, everyone should be commenting on one entry each week.

3. I don't have blogs for 2 groups still. Those 2 groups are behind. You need to speak to me and get help if there is a problem. If you don't see your blog on the right side of this page, I don't know about it. I have commented on every introduction. If I haven't commented, I didn't see your entry.

4. One group has a blog, but no introductions. Please do your introductions immediately. Please speak to me if there is a problem.

5. Remember: the writing you do on your blogs is 10% of your final grade. Everyone should be participating. Not everyone will get an A, and not participating is not A work.

As always, if you have any questions or confusion, please speak to me. I have teaching assistants who can translate if you are worried about speaking in English.

I will post the PPT from Friday's class by Sunday.

Guideline for Commenting on Blogs

Hi Class!

I realized I did not clearly explain my expectations of blog commenting. I gave an example, "Great introduction." However, I don't want you to only say "great introduction."

Try to find something that you can connect with. Maybe the writer likes something that you like too. Your comment should be specific, for example:

Hi Trey,
I like nature too. Have you been to Naksan behind Daehangno? It is a good place to walk and see the city and Namsan Tower in the distance. Spring is coming, so taking walks will be fun soon!
Have a great weekend!
Erika
*note: sign your name, so the writer and I know who posted the comment
Also, don't worry about your English not being perfect. The goal is communication, not perfection. Everyone understands that you make mistakes in a second language.

Day 3

Hello and Happy Friday!

Thanks for your patience today during the projector problem and thanks to the student who called the repairman! It's not always easy living in a country where you don't speak the language much. I have studied Korean a little, but my Korean is very basic (I can say "hello, goodbye, thank you, I'm American, I'm a teacher," some numbers, and a few other words and phrases - I'm happy I learned to read Korean, but it's not so helpful when I don't know the vocabulary!). So....I appreciate your help!

Tonight's post is mainly to give you the PPT from today's class. If you were absent, you need to view it to keep up to date. That reminds me! When you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to ask your group members or me what you missed! You are still responsible for the day's assignments. That reminds me! The new students need to complete the assessment from Wednesday and your name cards. Please get those from me next class.

Here's today's PPT:

Have a great weekend!

Week 2

Hello Class!

I hope everyone is enjoying their first couple weeks of university life! I know it can be stressful, but it is also exciting as you make new friends and have new experiences!

Here are some important notices:

1. We will have 2 new class members. Please welcome them. They will need to join a group.
2. Only 1 person from our class will change to another class. Check your email. I sent an email to the person who is changing. Everyone except the person I emailed should buy this book before next Wednesday:

4. If you don't have a group yet, we need to get you a group on Friday.
5. If you haven't started your blog yet, your group needs to start a blog and write your introductions. The 4 groups who already wrote their blogs have made a good first impression!
6. Below are the two PPTs from our first 2 classes. Please have a look if you are new to class or were absent:

Welcome to Trey's Reading and Writing Blog!

Hello Class!

I'll use this blog to post assignments and other important information. I really enjoy teaching reading and writing. I'm looking forward to this semester with you. I hope we can get to know each other as we share our writing and ideas on our blogs. Here's to a great semester!

By Sunday night, you need to do the following things:

1. Create a group blog and follow my blog so I can link to your blog and you can link to each other's blogs.

2. Also, each person in your group should write 7-10 sentences introducing herself on your group blog (What are you likes/dislikes, interests, hobbies?).

By the next class:
3. Buy a slim 30 page notebook for class journals.

4. Buy some index cards with a ring for vocabulary.

Here is an example introduction:

Hi Everyone!

My name is Trey. I have been living in Seoul for a year and 8 months. I am from Boston, Massachusetts. I am a very curious person who enjoys traveling, photography, nature (outdoors), reading, and surfing the web. I really enjoy finding interesting things on the Internet and sharing them with other people. Actually, I have a lot of interests! I enjoy drinking coffee with friends at coffee shops, watching movies, and eating delicious food! The craziest thing I have ever done is skydiving! It was really exciting and actually very peaceful after the first few minutes.
